extreme makeoverGREAT BARRINGTON, MA -- The Berkshire Slipcover Outlet in Great Barrington is holding an Extreme Makeover Contest. The contest runs through the month of June and is open to anyone willing to supply (and share with the public) a photo and description of a room they hate as well as a description of how they’d like the room to look. Photos may be dropped off or mailed to the store. The deadline for entering is 6 P.M. on June 30th.

Liana Toscanini, owner of the home furnishings store, explains that a panel of local judges will pick the two best candidates for a makeover prize. The criteria for makeover candidates include how ugly or plain the room is as well as its makeover potential. The prize includes a consultation with local interior design experts and the actual work required to transform the room to the winner’s liking. A room makeover could include paint, furnishings, accessories and slipcovers. Before and after photos of the two rooms will be available for viewing in the window of the Berkshire Slipcover Outlet. THIS CONTEST HAS ENDED.

Over the last nine months, the Berkshire Slipcover Outlet has undergone a transformation itself, from solely a slipcover store to a home décor store featuring a full line of linens including sheets, blankets, quilts and other bedding, rugs, chairpads, and table linens, as well as gift items with a regional flair such as: Bennington Pottery, Colonial Candles, Harney & Sons Teas, and Kennebunk Throws.

Gt. Barrington, MA - If you've ever tried readymade slipcovers, you know what a struggle it can be to get them styled correctly, especially if you don't own the overstuffed style of furniture so popular in the last decade. In some instances, depending on the shape of your furniture, you may not have been able to use a slipcover at all. This is particularly true for those with low, skinny, or wooden furniture arms.

Now there's a solution for those with petite-armed furniture. Specially-designed arm pads, called Furniture Falsies. Crafted in the shape of an overstuffed arm, they are placed on top of a small arm and tucked into the crevices of the furniture to secure, Furniture Falsies improve the look and fit of a slipcover.

Created by the owner of the Berkshire Slipcover Outlet in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, Furniture Falsies have been tested by slipcover customers since June, 2004. A former employee of slipcover-maker, Sure Fit, Inc., Liana Toscanini left the company two years ago to open a slipcover store. "Since I work with the customer every single day now, I'm really sympathetic to her needs," said Toscanini.

A pair is $19.95. To purchase Furniture Falsies call the Berkshire Slipcover Outlet during business hours.

Gt. Barrington, MA – The Berkshire Slipcover Outlet continues to expand, adding new products such as Supima jersey knit and flannel sheets, table linens, and pottery from Bennington Potters.

“I’m excited to carry a large selection of Bennington pottery,” said Liana Toscanini, store owner. Said Toscanini, “Bennington stoneware is still handmade in Vermont and offers exceptional quality. Stoneware is extremely durable and almost never chips.”

Toscanini has created an in-store boutique for Bennington pottery and offers their best-selling items such as mugs, pitchers, and mixing bowls as well as gift items, dinnerware and bakeware. All items are offered in Bennington’s signature glaze, blue agate, as well as mustard, black on green, and the new “Tavernware,” a hand-rubbed, matte finish in a tawny brown, reminiscent of early American pottery. Factory outlet pieces in unique glazes are also available at reduced prices.

The Berkshire Slipcover Outlet is the only readymade slipcover store in the country offering covers for all types of furniture including wingback furniture, recliners, futons and daybeds. Decorative pillows, ottoman cubes, chairpads, rugs, sheet sets, duvet covers and other gift items, including highly decorative pottery from Bulgaria, are all part of the mix.

Gt. Barrington – On Saturday, May 1st, 2004, the Berkshire Slipcover Outlet moved from Prime Outlets at Lee to Kmart Plaza in the space formerly occupied by the linen store, Open House. Coincidentally, the Berkshire Slipcover Outlet will also carry a variety of linens and home furnishings including slipcovers, decorative pillows, sheets, futon covers, chair pads and rugs.

Owner, Liana Toscanini, says the new store is 2000 square feet and will feature more displays, more product lines, and increased staff. After making a profit in her first year of business, Toscanini is taking a calculated risk that moving to tourist mecca, Great Barrington, and doubling the size of the store will reap similar rewards within the next 12 months. “I love the concept of the ‘community mall,’ says Toscanini, referring to Kmart Plaza, home of Kmart, Price Chopper and The Bookloft. “My local and regional customers are thrilled we’re moving to such a convenient place.”

A showcase for Sure Fit brand slipcovers, the store carries a full line of discounted, readymade covers for chairs, loveseats, sofas, dining chairs, folding chairs and ottomans as well as hard-to-find catalog items including slipcovers for wingback furniture, recliners, and chair ½’s. New this season are covers for sectional furniture. Toscanini also plans to introduce some custom work. “There is a need for smaller chair covers,” says Toscanini, who is responding by partnering with designer and seamstress, Jane Hason, to make “semi-custom” slipcovers for petite chairs. Customers will provide a few basic measurements and bring their seat cushion in to be custom-covered. This two-piece cover would look more like custom-made slipcovers but wouldn’t be quite as fitted says Toscanini.

The Berkshire Slipcover Outlet is unique in the U.S. and may serve as a prototype for a future franchise operation. Toscanini was a Vice President at Sure Fit, the country’s largest slipcover manufacturer, for ten years prior to starting her retail venture.
